Resumo
O objetivo maior desta Dissertação é fomentar a discussão das implicações teológico-pastorais e educacionais da relação entre educação, identidade confessional metodista e neopentecostalismo, propondo-se a analisar criticamente os aspectos fundamentais da teologia e da filosofia educacional do metodismo em contraposição às afirmações teológicas essenciais do neopentecostalismo, especialmente representadas pela Teologia da Prosperidade. Tentar-se-á comprovar a hipótese de que as "visões de mundo" características do metodismo wesleyano e do neopentecostalismo são incompatíveis e irreconciliáveis. O real problema que esta Dissertação procura investigar cientificamente é, pois, a relação entre Evangelho, Igreja Metodista e Educação e em que medida esta relação tem sido afetada pela influência da postura e da prática teológica e pastoral do neopentecostalismo. Em outras palavras, a Dissertação quer investigar como o contexto social e político do País e as linhas missionárias dominantes na Igreja Metodista, ao longo da segunda metade do século XX e até os dias de hoje, interferiram em seu projeto educacional. Finalmente, a Dissertação pretende demonstrar que a Teologia da Prosperidade, em seus princípios essenciais, pode afetar a Igreja Metodista e suas instituições educacionais, constituindo-se efetivamente numa ameaça concreta à identidade metodista.
Abstract
The main purpose of this research is to foster discussion of theological, pastoral and educational implications of the relationship between education, Methodist confessional identity and neo-Pentecostalism by critically analyzing the fundamental aspects of theology and educational philosophy of Methodism in contrast to the essential theological statements of neo-Pentecostalism, especially represented by the Prosperity theology. The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that the Wesleyan-Methodist "world view" and the neo-Pentecostalism are incompatible and irreconcilable. The real matter that this thesis intends to investigate scientifically is therefore the relationship between the Gospel, Methodist Church and Education and to what extent this relationship has been affected by the influence of the neo-Pentecostal posture and theological and pastoral practice. In other words, this thesis intends to investigate how the social and political context of Brazil and the dominant missionary branches in the Methodist Church, during the second half of the twentieth century and even today, interfered in their educational project. Finally, this thesis aims to demonstrate that the Prosperity theology, in its essential principles, can affect the Methodist Church and its educational institutions, effectively becoming a real threat to the Methodist identity.
