Resumo
Guaracy Silveira foi o primeiro pastor protestante da história do parlamento brasileiro. Eleito em 1933, em conseqüência de sua importante participação na luta contra o ensino religioso nas escolas públicas de São Paulo, participou das Assembléias Constituintes de 1934 e 1946. Protagonista importante no processo de autonomia da Igreja Metodista do Brasil, ocorrida em 1930, e exercendo tarefas de destaque desde sua adesão ao metodismo, a experiência parlamentar contribuiu de maneira decisiva para o aprofundamento de suas convicções a respeito do papel da igreja na sociedade. Dedicado aprendiz dos procedimentos democráticos que norteavam o debate no parlamento brasileiro, tornou-se extremamente vigilante e passou a exigir das autoridades eclesiásticas maior fidelidade ao projeto de um metodismo democrático.
Abstract
Guaracy Silveira was the first Protestant minister in the history of the Brazilian parliament. Elected in 1933, as a consequence of his important participation in the struggle against religious teaching in the public schools of São Paulo, he participated of the Constitutional Assemblies of 1934 and 1946. As an important protagonist in the process of autonomy of the Methodist Church of Brazil, that took place in 1930, and exerting tasks of prominence since its adhesion to the Methodism, his parliamentary experience contributed in a decisive way for the deepening of his beliefs regarding the paper of the church in society. As a dedicated apprentice of the democratic procedures that guided the debate in the Brazilian parliament, he became extremely vigilant and started to demand of the ecclesiastical authorities a greater allegiance to the project of a democratic Methodism.
